2010 Category Winners to be proud of!
Finalists kept the audience spellbound as they told the tales and reasons behind their nominations for the Pride of Andover Awards 2010.
The Community Champion Award
Winner – Linda Barber
Deserving winner, Linda Barber, was nominated for her outstanding service to the community through the Salvation Army and the Rotary Club. Linda recently retired, due to ill health, to live with her family. She will be sorely missed in the Andover community.
Highly Commended – Hilary Briley
Home-Start volunteer and fundraiser, Hilary dedicates herself to helping others.
Highly Commended – Peter Mather
Pilgrims Way community website creator Peter took it upon himself to keep residents informed via the internet.
The Fundraiser Award
Winner – Kate Mills
Kate was recognised for her outstanding fundraising efforts which have topped £20,000, including holding a coffee morning in her house for nine-years (and counting) to raise money for the Countess of Brecknock.
Highly Commended - Jordan Simcox
Jordan spends almost all his free time fundraising to help less fortunate youngsters.
One of his chosen charities is the Jamie G Sporting Trust.
The Good Neighbour Award
Winner – Marjorie Jones
Marjorie, who herself is 87-years-old, maintains her lifetime habit of caring for others by looking after her 93-year-old neighbour.
The Long Term Commitment Award
Winner - Bridget Olden
Bridget was instrumental in setting up Andover’s stroke club 23 years ago and is still actively involved to this day.
Highly Commended - Jackie Cleaver
Jacqui has spent over 30 years giving her time and expertise to the Test Valley Riding and Driving for the Disabled.
She said it was wonderful to see the pleasure it gave to so many – the reward was the joy in the faces of the riders.
Outstanding Volunteer Award
Winner - Yana Williams
What a volunteer! Yana helps out with Askalot Information Shop, Homestart, Streetdance, Turnaround Project Holiday Activities, Fusion, Kids Club and carries out detached youth work.
Highly Commended - Stephen Pugh
Stephen's fundraising efforts around Andover often see him dressed up as a banana.
He is partially-sighted but that does not deter him from making others laugh. He reminded Esther that she once dressed up as an orange on ‘That’s Life’!
The Contribution to Sport Award
Winner - Jean Taylor
Jean was declared the winner for her 27 years at Andover Athletics Club which includes running and more recently coaching.
She was nominated by runners inspired by her support.
Highly Commended - Dave Kane
Dave is anything to do with sport! Rugby, darts, Testway 7s, Andover Athletics he’s always fit to get involved 100%.
Highly Commended - Mark Thorne
Mark has helped, encouraged and supported more than 150 youngsters in the Darts Academy. He gives up all his free time
and never seeks recognition.
The Citizenship Award
Winners - the Gateway teenagers
This group of seven teenagers regularly volunteer and help with the Andover Gateway Club for disabled adults Kym Bickell, Chloe Kirkham, Harriet Rowland, Nikki Taylor, Charlotte Collyer, Elliot Copestake and Cameron Slaven all spoke of the rewards of volunteering.
Highly Commended - Paul Owens
Paul says that it is never too late. Having been through rehab himself and now fully recovered from addiction, Paul now helps others through self-management and recovery training (SMART) groups in Andover.
The Carers Award
Winner - Jim Foley
Nominated by his partner for his devotion in looking after her following an accident in 2004, Jim was humble in his acceptance of the award saying it was not a chore in any way.
The Spirit of Andover
Winner - Liz Cosgrove
Known for her day job as the fundraising manager at Enham, in her spare time Liz has helped raise thousands for charity and helps out with the Jamie G Sporting Trust. She was a very popular winner.
The Courage Award
Winner - Katie Piper
Katie was nominated by two people who have never met her but see her as an inspiration. Katie come into the media spotlight when she was the victim of a horrific acid attack and suffered serious facial and upper body injuries. She has undergone many operations and treatments but now runs a charity to help other people with disfigurements. Katie said the award was for her parents who have always been by her side.
Highly Commended - Thomas Tobin
Thomas has cerebral palsy but he doesn’t let it get in his way. He was nominated by a friend who says Thomas is always smiling despite his on-going health problems. Thomas says you have to get on with life, positively.
The Andover Vision Special Award
Winner - Julian Sore
Julian was recognised for his devoted work with Scouts and Guides building schools in Uganda and Zambia. Every other year Julian leads a working party to Africa to help small communities. He is currently planning his seventh trip.
The Contribution to the Arts
Winner - Steven Large
Nominated for his outstanding commitment to music, Steven’s voluntary work with the Test Valley Brass Band has brought them expansion and success.
Highly Commended - Richie Madison
Richie was nominated for his constant support for the music scene in Andover. ‘He’s been around forever, helping others’ – and it seems his time is given freely and for many great causes.
The Mayor’s Award for Outstanding Contribution
Winner - Pam Diamond
What a diamond Pam is too! Mayor & Mayoress, Chris and Frances Lynn were proud to present the award to Pam. Although now deaf she continues to help people of all ages as she has always done over the years.
Heart of Gold (Pride of Andover Award)
Winner - Jacqui Gentleman
Jacqui tragically lost her youngest son Jamie in 2009. She and her family set up the Jamie G Sporting Trust to raise funds for local sporting organisations in his memory. Jacqui received a standing ovation from the audience- a very popular winner.
